How It Works

SSN Structure

A US Social Security Number is a 9-digit number in the format AAA-GG-SSSS, consisting of three parts:

Area Number
XXX
First 3 digits
Group Number
XX
Middle 2 digits
Serial Number
XXXX
Last 4 digits
Validation Rules
  • Must be exactly 9 digits
  • Area number (first 3 digits) cannot be 000, 666, or 900-999
  • Group number (middle 2 digits) cannot be 00
  • Serial number (last 4 digits) cannot be 0000
Known Invalid SSNs

The SSA has explicitly flagged certain numbers as invalid:

  • 078-05-1120 — Used in a 1938 wallet advertisement
  • 219-09-9999 — Used in a 1962 advertisement
  • Any SSN used in official documentation as examples
Limitations

This validator checks format and structure only. It does NOT verify:

  • Whether the SSN has been issued to a person
  • Whether the SSN is currently active
  • The identity of the holder
Important: This tool is for educational and format-checking purposes only. Never enter a real Social Security Number on any website.
